Shayna Elkins scored on a header off a corner kick by teammate
Katie Brown to rally the Dominican University of California women's soccer team to a halftime tie, but host Notre Dame de Namur University tallied three goals in a 12-minute span in the second half to beat the Lady Penguins 4-1 in a Pacific West Conference game Tuesday.
Dominican (3-9-1/1-6-1) had battled back from a penalty kick goal by freshman Massiel Castellanos for the Argonauts (4-7-2/3-2-2) to score at the 20-minute mark and was pressing to net the go-ahead goal in the second half.
Alex Moran and
Michelle Bella nearly connected for a score, Brown had four corner kicks and
Tori Selesia had a good look at the NDNU goal but goalkeeper Kelsey Baxter made the stop.
“We created opportunities for ourselves to score,” said Dominican Director of Soccer
Jon Delano. “This is the part of the season where we have to be better mentally. I don't think we were strong enough mentally… It's obvious it's something we will discuss and touch on and try to improve.”
Freshman Bianca Lemus scored two of the Argonauts' three second-half goals, one off a rebound. In the first half, the Penguins were more fortunate when Dominican goalkeeper
Megan Herring made a diving save and defender
Carrie Freyer cleared the rebound.
“I think we were very good in the first half,” said Delano. “It was unfortunate we gave up a penalty kick after controlling the majority of play in the first half. It was good to get the goal to come back.”
The Lady Penguins are off until next Tuesday, October 25 when they go on the road again to play at Humboldt State. Game time is 11:00 a.m.
