Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Dominican University of California women's soccer team was stunned by a flurry of goals in a short amount of time in a 3-0 loss at Grand Canyon University on Monday night.

With a game-time temperature of 86 degrees, the Lady Penguins (3-8-0/1-5-0) and 'Lopes (5-4-2/4-1-1) played to a scoreless tie through the first 30 minutes of their Pacific West Conference contest before Grand Canyon erupted for its three goals in the final 15 minutes before halftime.

“We had a couple of really good opportunities, a couple of balls that rolled through the six-yard box untouched. Unfortunately we unable to get onto them and they made us pay for that,” said Dominican Director of Soccer Jon Delano. “We had two of those in a row and they came down and got their first goal and obviously they got a couple more quick in succession.”

The 'Lopes outshot Dominican 16-2 in the game. Sophomore Tori Selesia had the Lady Penguins' only shot on goal 4:44 into the game. Teammate Mallory Engelhardt had the other shot.

It was a bad match-up on paper for Dominican. Led by Marina Nesic, GCU entered the game as the PacWest's second-leading team in shots attempted (16.9 per game) and last month beat a Dixie State College team 2-0 that last Saturday beat the Lady Penguins by twice as much. Nesic had an unassisted goal and an assist for the 'Lopes against Dominican.

“We just weren't sharp enough. Unfortunately the games are not just 45 minutes, they're 90. We've got to be able to put two good halves together,” said Delano. “The second half we were very good. We were much better defensively. Grand Canyon is a very good team and they made us pay for those mistakes.”

The Lady Penguins are back home on Saturday, October 15 to host PacWest rival Academy of Art University of San Francisco. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Field.
