SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – In his final game of his career, senior guard
Alastair Flack led the Dominican University of California men's basketball team to a 67-59 Pacific West Conference victory over Chaminade University on Saturday night.
Chaminade jumped out to a nine-point lead midway through the first half. Dominican answered with an 11-point run that sent the Penguins ahead 25-24 on a
Mark Lewis jumper. On the next play, Lewis came up with a steal at the other end of the floor and got the layup to push the lead to three. A
Killian Larson free throw kept the Penguins ahead by three headed into halftime.
The Penguins pushed the second half lead to eight points before Chaminade trimmed the lead to two points with seven minutes to play. By the four minute mark Dominican extended the lead back to eight and never allowed the Silver Swords closer than six points the rest of the way. Flack score four crucial points in the final two minutes to help the Penguins secure the victory.
Flack didn't scored until 10 minutes into the game but finished the night with a team-high 17 points.
Killian Larson added 14 points and five rebounds.
Mark Lewis tallied nine points and
Xander McNally added eight poitns, five assists, and four steals. Senior
Fox Mulholland got the start and completed his career with six points and three rebounds. Fellow senior
Alex Ward finished with two points in the final game of his career but fended the Silver Swords off on the defensive end, pulling down five rebounds.
Matt Cousins led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds for Chaminade. Steven Bennett added 14 points in the loss.
With the win, Dominican is guaranteed no lower than a sixth place finish out of the nine-team conference. Chaminade falls to 9-15/6-9 and will need a win in their final game against Hawai'i Pacific University to tie the Penguins for sixth place. Dixie State claimed at least a share of the PacWest crown earlier in the night with an overtime victory. The Penguins' finish the 2009-2010 campaign 10-17 overall and 7-9 in their first season of Division II play.
