SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball team struggled on the opening night of its own Dominican Classic, falling 88-62 to visiting Saint Martin's University at the Conlan Center.
The Penguins (0-6) scored the first basket of the game on an
Ian Collins layup but Saint Martin's (7-4) went on a 24-5 run that spanned the next six minutes to take a 17 point advantage. Dominican chipped the lead to 11 before the Saints extended the deficit to 16 headed into halftime. The Penguins never got back into the game in the second half, with the Saints taking as large as a 29 point lead in the final 20 minutes of play.
Dominican shot .469 from the field but put up 11 less shots than the Saints, who scorched the nets with their .550 shooting on the night. Dominican was barely edged on the rebounding front, pulling one less than the 30 recorded by Saint Martin's.
The Saints' Galen Squiers led all players with 26 points, with 15 points coming on five three-pointers. He and Brady Bomber tied for the team-high with five assists apiece. Blake Poole went 5-of-6 from the field en route to a 15 point night and added a team-high seven rebounds. Jeremy Green scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Saints.
Guards
Adam Chavis and Collins led the Penguins with 12 points apiece. Freshman guard
Brendan Holmes hit two three-pointers and finished the night with six points. Freshman center
Connor Haysbert led the Penguins with four rebounds.
The Penguins conclude the Dominican Classic on Saturday with the 7:30 p.m. finale when they host Seattle Pacific University, who topped Notre Dame de Namur University 82-76 in Friday's first game of the night. NDNU faces Saint Martin's on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and a women's basketball game precedes both games with the Lady Penguins hosting Cal State Monterey Bay at 2:00 p.m.
