SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — In a non-conference matchup on Sunday, the Dominican University of California Lady Penguins shut out the Oaks of Menlo College 5-0. Sophomore Mary Wheeler finished with two goals, matching a career-high.

The scoring opened up early as Katie Brown's throw in found junior captain Shayna Elkins for the Lady Penguins' (4-5-1) first goal in the eleventh minute. Brown's assist would be her first of two on the day.

Freshman Lexi Humphry got some luck as a clearing attempt by Menlo (2-7-1) found her. Humphry found the net shortly thereafter, giving the second goal to the Lady Penguins.

Using her head, sophomore Julianna Bratsberg put Domincian up 3-0 in the 37th minute. The assist on Bratsberg's goal was Brown's second in the match.

Late in the first half, Wheeler got her first of two goals off a header from Bratsberg. Her second goal came later in the match, in the 69th minute, on a break downfield from Marli Sangervasi.

In addition to 22 shots, including 13 on goal, and five goals scored by the Lady Penguins, the defense provided a stellar performance as well. The Oaks only registered one shot the entire match, with none on goal.

Dominican Head Coach Jon Delano seemed pleased with the team's effort on Sunday.

“I thought [the match] went well. I thought it was a good match leading into our road trip to Hawai'i,” Delano said.

That road trip to Hawai'i begins this coming Thursday, October 14 as the Lady Penguins face Hawai'i Pacific University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
