BOX SCORE
BELMONT, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball used a 13-point second-half run to earn its third Pacific West Conference victory on Tuesday, a 70-59 win over Notre Dame de Namur University.
The game started out with a turnover by each team before Trent Henwood scored the game's first points for NDNU (2-15/0-7).
Mark Lewis answered with a bucket for Dominican (6-11/3-3). The Argonauts took an 11-8 lead before an
Austin Bryan layup and
Fox Mulholland free throw knotted things at 11-11. Bryan knocked down a step-back three-pointer at 9:55 to give Dominican its first lead of the game, 16-13. The Penguins took a three-point advantage but the Argonauts answered again when Chris Silzer drained a three to tie the game at 24-24 at the 3:45 mark. The basket kicked off a 7-0 NDNU run but Bryan was fouled in the corner with 1:09 on the clock for the four-point play to tie the game at 28-28. Mulholland was fouled on a fast-break with 4.9 seconds and knocked down a pair of free throws to send Dominican into the locker room with the 30-28 lead.
Henwood tied things up for the Argonauts in the second half but it was Bryan getting it done again with the up and under layup that kicked off an eventful 13-point run.
Alex Ward slammed one home the next trip down but the next possession was when things got interesting. With just under 14 minutes to play, Bryan deflected the ball downcourt and was pushed in the back by NDNU's Silzer on a no-look circus shot. Silzer argued the call and was called for a technical, his fifth foul, setting up Bryan's five-point play. A minute and a half later,
Killian Larson capped the run with a monster dunk to give the Penguins the 43-30 lead.
Alastair Flack's pullup jumper in the key gave the Penguins their biggest lead of the night, 58-43, with five minutes to go. The Argonauts pulled within eight but the Penguins held on down the stretch to earn their third conference victory.
The Penguins took care of the ball, only making seven turnovers while forcing 19. Dominican shot .455 from the field and also shot .806 from the free throw line.
Bryan, named last week's PacWest player of the week after scoring 60 points in two games, has been averaging 18.2 points per game in conference action (third place). He led all scorers with 28 points, making 9-of-15 from the field and all eight of his free throws. Lewis, McNally, Mulholland, and Ward all added eight points apiece in the victory. Larson led Dominican with seven rebounds.
Bennie Murray, averaging 14.5 points per game in conference play (ninth place), finished with 21 points. Cheynne Lishman added 10 points in the loss.
