Bryan's 31 points propel Penguins past Urban Knights

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Freshman Austin Bryan's 31 points propelled the Dominican University of California men's basketball team to its second Pacific West Conference win, an 82-62 victory over Academy of Art University at San Francisco's Kezar Pavilion on Saturday night.

AAU won the tip and Phillip Samuel got the Urbran Knights (0-15/0-5) on the board first. A Killian Larson free throw put Dominican (5-11/2-3) in the book and Xander McNally connected on a no-look pass to Alex Ward for the layup to go up 3-2 inside the first minute of play. Bryan put a second chance bucket in at 17:45 to give the Penguins a 5-2 lead. The Urban Knights tied the game up and took a 7-5 lead at the 16-minute mark before McNally penetrated middle to tie it back up. Fox Mulholland found Bryan under the hoop to start a 6-0 run to take the 13-8 lead. AAU answered with a 5-point run to snatch the lead away at 19-18. Mark Lewis found Bryan rolling off a screen for the bucket and the 23-20 lead. A Xavier Muldrow steal led to a fastbreak layup by Bryan and Bryan added another two of his 22 first half points on a pair of double bonus free throws. Bryan buried his second three-pointer of the half to put Dominican up 36-27 with 2:00 to play and Tyler Sokol put the Penguins up by 21 on a pair of free throws with 1:46 to go. A Jonathan Burnett bucket with :22 to go cut the Dominican lead to 40-29 at halftime.

A pair of Mark Lewis free throws got Dominican going in the second half. Another Sokol bucket and free throw put the Penguins ahead 49-36. Bryan added four points on the next two possessions to extend the lead 54-38 and rack up 31 points, although he wouldn't score in the game's final 16 minutes. The Penguins continued their second-half tear, with Sokol and Alex Ward tacking on another three points from free throws to push the lead to 59-40. Dominican held onto a 15-point or greater lead the rest of the half. The Penguins took advantage of Urban Knights foul trouble, as 2 players fouled out with over seven minutes left in the game.

Bryan, coming off a 29-point performance in a two-point loss to Dixie State, just missed matching his career-high of 33 that he set against Division I University of San Francisco. He led all players in scoring and rebounding with seven boards, shot 9-of-13 from the field, made 3-of-5 three pointers, and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line.

Muldrow added career-highs of 11 points and six rebounds. Larson notched 10 points. Alastair Flack and McNally each addd eight points in the win.

Olivier led the Urban Knights with 13 points. Samuel scored 11 points and Jordan Knox finished the night with 10 points.

Dominican shot 21-of-43 (.488) from the field while AAU went 22-of-53 (.415).

The Penguins next play on Friday, Nov. 29 when they travel to rival Notre Dame de Namur University. Tipoff in Belmont is set for 7:30 p.m.
