HAYWARD, Calif. — The Dominican University of California men's basketball season came to an end as the Penguins fell 67-59 to William Jessup University on Friday afternoon.
Senior center
Ryan Trammel ended his career with an 18-point effort to lead Dominican. Brothers
Ray Chavis and
Adam Chavis each added 10 points apiece in the loss.
Zach Sowers led all scorers with 19 points for William Jessup.
Dominican struggled mightily in the first half, as Jessup nailed 11 three-pointers en route to a a 35-25 lead. The two teams exchanged baskets in the second half, with Dominican actually outscoring the Warriors, but the Penguins could never catch the lead. Dominican shot better from the field - .500 compared to WJU's .460 - but the Warriors stepped back to make 11 three-pointers in the game, compared to just 2 by Dominican. The Penguins were haunted by poor free throw shooting once again, making only 7-of-15 attempts, the difference in the game. Dominican also outrebounded WJU 34-28, led by senior forward
Chris DeMarco 10 and Trammel's 9 rebounds.
Six of Dominican's seven seniors scored in the game, including four year senior Trammel and
Chris Souza(pictured), who redshirted his freshman year and played three varsity seasons.
The Penguins had high hopes coming into the season, coming off the program's fourth Cal Pac championship in five seasons. However, the Penguins never quite found the right chemistry and fell short in their quest for a fifth title, falling to this year's champ, CSU East Bay, twice and WJU twice. Dominican finishes the season at 16-13 and in third place in the Cal Pac with an 11-5 conference record.
Next season, Dominican will move to NCAA Division II and join the Pacific West Conference. The PacWest consists of Brigham Young University Hawaii, the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific University, Grand Canyon University in Arizona, Dixie State College of Utah, and Notre Dame de Namur University in nearby Belmont, California.
