SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The first bucket of the night was a three-pointer by Chris Fields for CSU Los Angeles and the Dominican University of California men's basketball team would see 11 more travel through the cylinder as the Penguins fell to the Golden Eagles 72-59 on Wednesday evening at the Conlan Center.
After the first bucket of the game, the Golden Eagles quickly went up 9-4 on a Chris Robinson dunk. Dominican (2-7) cut the lead to a point on a
Fox Mulholland layup but CSULA (4-1) quickly pushed the lead to eight on a Dwayne Jones three-pointer. From there, the Golden Eagles mounted a 17-point lead before a
Mike Wells three-pointer with 12 seconds to go in the first half cut the lead to 40-26 at halftime.
Mark Lewis' fast break layup got the Penguins on the scoreboard first in the second half and sparked an 11-2 run that cut the Golden Eagle lead to 44-39 with 14:40 to play. The Golden Eagles answered again, this time extending the lead to 13 on another Jones jump shot. With 5:31 left in regulation, another Robinson three-pointer pushed the gap to the largest of the night at 17. The Penguins closed the game out with an 11-7 run but couldn't get any closer.
Dominican shot just .373 compared to the hot .587 shooting of CSULA. The Golden Eagles also made .750 of their three-point attempts.
Fields paced all players, knocking down 7-of-14 field goals, including going a perfect 4-of-4 from deep. Robinson was just as impressive with 18 points, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 from behind the three-point line. Jones added 12 points in the victory. All three players pulled down five rebounds and Nuno Furtado led the Golden Eagles with eight boards.
Killian Larson led the Penguins in scoring with 11 points and nine rebounds. Mulholland added 10 points.
Austin Bryan and Lewis each chipped in nine points apiece.
Dominican and San Rafael High School are combining to stage a toy drive during Dominican's next home game, the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, Dec. 19. The toy drive, held in conjunction with the annual “Holiday Season Toy Drive” by the Ross Valley Firefighter's Club, San Anselmo Police Officer's Association, and Fairfax Police Officer's Association, is an effort to provide toys for children in the Ross Valley community. Fans bringing new unwrapped toys on Saturday will be admitted free to the games. The San Rafael Bulldogs (4-1) will play Albany High School (7-2) in a non-league game at 5:30 p.m. followed by Dominican's non-conference game against former NAIA Division II foe Holy Names University, who also lost recently to CSULA.
