SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Dominican University of California women's basketball crossed the century mark on the scoreboard on Wednesday night, using a 69-point second half to defeat Pacific Union College 102-45 in non-conference play.
PUC (0-2) got on the scoreboard first on a Vanessa Felder layup and held a 5-0 lead three minutes in. Over the next two minutes of play Dominican (1-1) snatched the lead back at 6-5 and held on the rest of the way, using a 27-10 run to close out the half.
The Lady Penguins exploded out of the gate in the second half, riding a 38-5 run in the first ten minutes to put the game out of reach. The rest of the game became a formality, as Dominican forced 47 Pioneer turnovers in the game and held PUC to just .326 shooting from the field.
Four Dominican players reached double-digit scoring.
Alisha Flaaten went 6-of-8 from the field with three three-pointers and led all players with 17 points while dishing out five assists.
Shelly Clermenco came off the bench to add 16 points and four rebounds.
Kelsey Janusch added 13 points off the bench and
Raquel Gomes also went 6-of-8 to finish the night with a dozen points.
Shawna Bryant and
Melissa Wise each pulled down a team-leading six rebounds.
Tammy Brawner dropped seven of the Lady Penguins' 35 assists.
Carla Bartlett paced the Pioneers with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.
"The second half was really good because we made the extra pass and we had intensity on the floor and on the bench," said Dominican Head Coach
Brianna Chambers of her team's effort. "It was really good to see us execute the things that we've been working on in practice."
The Lady Penguins next step on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Chico State. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Acker Gym.
