Penguins speed past Silverswords

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball dominated Chaminade 81-50 Thursday night at the Conlan Recreation Center.

Janiya Sawyer led the Penguins (20-7, 14-7 PacWest) with 18 points, five rebounds and six assists. Isobel Crosswhite added 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Julien Parado led the Silverswords (0-25, 0-21 PacWest) with 12 points and three rebounds.

Dominican made a living inside after a slow start as Jamia Sawyer drove the lane for a pair of layups and Aryn Bright found Julianne Cotterill running in transition for another to take a 10-5 lead into the final two minutes of the quarter. Bright pulled up near the top of the key with under a minute to play and nailed the team's first 3-pointer of the evening to extend the lead to eight, but Parado hit a short jumper for the Silverswords to end the scoring in the first quarter.

Alyssa Schuetze opened the scoring in the second with a short jumper in the paint to cut the Chaminade deficit to four, but Bright hit another pull up and Janiya Sawyer drove coast-to-coast in transition to take an 18-9 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Janiya Sawyer pushed the lead into double digits three minutes later as she maneuvered through traffic in the lane for a leaning jumper to make it 23-12. The lead grew as high as 15 as Janiya Sawyer drove for two with under a minute in the half and Dominican took a 31-18 lead into the break.

With one twin ending the half leading the run, it was the other leading the charge into the new half. Jamia Sawyer used off-ball movement to position herself for two easy layups early in the third quarter and the Penguins opened on an 8-point run that pushed the lead to 39-18 three minutes into the new period. A technical foul late in the third gave Dominican three points from the charity stripe and Crosswhite followed with a turnaround jumper to cap another 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 59-35 with 47 seconds left in the quarter.

With a short bench already, Chaminade saw four players foul out resulting in them playing with four players for the final six minutes of play allowing the Penguins to push the lead over 30 points on the way to victory.

Dominican will conclude the regular season Saturday when it takes on Fresno Pacific for the last time as PacWest foes at 1 p.m. PST at the Conlan Center.
