SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Dominican University of California women's volleyball dropped a 3-0 decision to Biola on Friday night at the Conlan Center, falling 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 in the Penguins' PacWest opener. The Igloo was packed as this match was a blackout and the first 100 fans wearing black received free food from Forrest Fire BBQ.
Alexis Schwartz led Dominican offensively with 14 kills on 38 attacks, while Kristina Atonio added eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Kali Young contributed seven kills and finished with 7.5 points.
Dominican found its strongest offensive rhythm in the third set, recording 15 kills, but Biola matched that total and closed out the set to complete the sweep. Overall, the Penguins finished with 37 kills and hit .165 for the match.
Sophia Bernabe anchored Dominican defensively with a match-high 19 digs. Chloe Cruz and Cierra Ray each added eight digs, while Cruz also directed the offense with 13 assists. Melena Wong contributed 12 assists and four digs.
At the net, Ashlyn Daugherty and Schwartz each recorded three blocks, while Jazzlyn Zendejas added two. Dominican finished with six total blocks compared to five for Biola. The Penguins will be back on the court tomorrow as they welcome in Vanguard at 2 p.m.
