Dominican battles Vanguard tough

San Rafael, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball team fought hard from start to finish, but Vanguard University came through at the end. The Penguins were led by freshman Kristina Atonio on offense who had a team high 10 kills.

Dominican came out ready to compete, pushing Vanguard all the way in a back-and-forth opening set. The Penguins battled point for point and had their chances late, but Vanguard managed to close it out, 27-25, to take the early advantage.

The second set saw Dominican continue to battle, but Vanguard found its rhythm offensively and pulled away for a 25-21 win. The Penguins refused to quit, however, continuing to pressure Vanguard and looking for an opportunity to turn the match around.
Vanguard ultimately put the match away in the third, taking another 25-21 decision to complete the sweep.

Atonio led the Penguins offensively with 10 kills while hitting .333, while Alexis Schwartz added nine kills. Kalaya Phung contributed six kills, and Chloe Cruz directed the offense with 18 assists.

Defensively, Sophia Bernabe was everywhere for Dominican, finishing with a match-high 19 digs while also recording two service aces. Ashlyn Daugherty made her presence felt at the net with a team-best four blocks, while Jazzlyn Zendejas added two blocks and an ace.

The Penguins also made their presence felt from the service line, recording seven aces compared to five for Vanguard. Dominican also won the battle at the net with seven blocks to Vanguard's four led by Daugherty and Zendejas.

Dominican will be back on the court Sept. 25th at 6 p.m. as they host Point Loma.
