SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 7-0 Sunday afternoon to Illinois State at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The Red Birds (9-3) looked every bit of a quality NCAA Division I opponent as Vittoria Benedetti and Emma Lindh captured No. 3 doubles 6-1, with Nicole Iosio and Nuria Sanz adding a 6-2 victory on the second court moments later to clinch the point. The Penguins (5-4) had been battling hard at No. 1 doubles with
Maria Gavrilov and Sofia Acuña leaving the match unfinished in a 3-3 tie with their ISU opponents.
While the Red Birds swept the singles portion in straight sets,
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja came the closest to taking a set as she took Silvia Pomarolli to a 6-6 tie in the second set. The tiebreaker was equally close, but Pomarolli was able to edge ahead and hold on for the 6-0, 7-6 (4) victory to complete the sweep.
Dominican will turn its focus back to the ranks of NCAA Division II as it takes on Jessup on Friday at 10 a.m. PDT at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
