TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 4-3 Sunday afternoon to Stanislaus State at Stan State Tennis Courts.
The Warriors (3-5) struck first as Katrine Damkjaer and Parker Orlando took a 6-2 decision in No. 2 doubles, but
Ana Rios and
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja responded for the Penguins (6-5) with a 6-2 victory in No. 3 doubles moments later.
Kaylee Lopez and Sofia Acuña claimed the doubles point for Dominican as they held off Emma Yu and Abbigail Mulick 7-5 on the top court to send the Penguins into singles leading 1-0.
Rios gave Dominican another point to start singles as she won 6-0, 6-2 in No. 6 singles, but Maiah White put Stanislaus State on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Vanaraja like her doubles partner helped keep the Penguins in the lead as she topped Yu 6-4, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles to put Dominican a point away from the clinch.
The Warriors had other ideas as Orlando held on in the first set 7-5 over Lopez before a 6-2 victory in set two to move within a point of the Penguins. Katrine Damkjaer and
Maria Gavrilov battled late into the afternoon in No. 3 singles with Damkjaer taking the first set 6-3 before Gavrilov won 6-2 in the second set. Damkjaer rebounded and claimed the third set 6-2 to tie the match 3-3.
All eyes turned to No. 1 singles where Acuña battled Mulick. Mulick took the first set 6-3 and the second set was a nailbiter going into a tiebreaker. It was Acuña that survived the tiebreaker for a 7-6 (2) victory, but Mulick once again found her groove to win the third set 6-3 and clinch the match for Stanislaus State.
Dominican will return home to face Chaminade on Tuesday at noon PDT at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
