Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Pengs show grit, defeat Converse 12-7

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina.- Dominican women's lacrosse (7-1, 1-0) continued their southern road trip with another victory, this time against the Valkyries of Converse University. The Penguins jumped out the gates fast as they collected the first five points of the game. Ryan Bionda, the graduate student out of Ontario, led the way offensively for the black and gold posting three goals while scooping up three ground balls.

Morgan Newkirk, Kyra Evans, and Olivia Johnson all collected two goals apiece against the Valkyries. Speaking of Johnson, she once again shined in the draws picking up a game high 10 draw control wins. Newkirk and Evans, the San Diego natives would connect midway through the second when Evans received a nice dish from Newkirk and finished the play off ripping one past the goalkeeper. Johnson would then cap off the 5-0 run when she slipped past the Converse defense assisted on the play by fellow San Diego native Stella Artukovich.

Dominican's defense was active all throughout the game as they forced nine turnovers by the Valkyries offense while coming up with 22 ground balls. Newkirk and junior Elke Moerkeseth led the black and gold in that department each scooping up a game high four ground balls.

Chelsea Johnson and Bionda would seal the victory for the Penguins in the fourth with Johnson receiving a nice dime from Evans and finishing strong for the goal. Then it was Bionda who called her own number with five minutes left for her 25th goal of the season.

Dominican will wrap up their southern road trip March 16th when they play a neutral site game at Converse against Southern Connecticut State at 11 a.m. EST.
