SPARTANBURG, South Carolina.- Dominican women's lacrosse (7-2.1-0) wrapped up their three-game southern road trip Monday afternoon squaring off against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University. Senior captain
Morgan Newkirk would lead the black and gold's offense in this one posting a game high four goals, but it would be the Owls who squeaked out the 13-11 victory.
The Owls would start fast Monday afternoon as they jumped out to a 7-2 lead midway through the second quarter. That's when Newkirk, the San Diego native, would say enough is enough as she called her own number twisting by Owl defenders and riffling one past the goalie jump-starting a Dominican run of their own. Moments later, Newkirk shared the wealth as she found a cutting
Taylor Pieri who finished with a slick down low shot that went past the Owl goalie.
After the Owls started with a 7-2 lead, the Pengs would answer going for six straight goals of their own.
Kyra Evans, the fellow San Diego native, capped of the black and gold run midway through the third when she zigged and zagged through the Owls defense for a sweet-looking goal. Evans would finish the day right behind Newkirk with three goals, and Pieri rounded it out collecting two.
Piper Mott, the sophomore out of Washington, took charge in the draw department for the Pengs as she dazzled with a game high 10 draw controls wins. Evans not only got it done on the offensive side of the ball, but on the other end she came up with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Sienna Prak-Perry was right behind her with three.
Dominican will now travel to Quincy March. 27
