Penguins start spring break road trip with a bang

SALISBURY, North Carolina.- Dominican women's lacrosse (6-1,1-0) kicked off their southern spring break road trip Wednesday afternoon squaring off against Catawba College. Ryan Bionda would lead the way offensively for the black and gold posting a game high three goals as the Pengs would drop the Indians 14-2.

Senior leader Olivia Johnson got the day started for the Pengs when she found some space in the Indians defense and fired one past the goalie for the first points of the game. Johnson, the Washington native, was all over the field especially in the first half when she collected eight draw controls, two goals, and two assists.

Kyra Evans and Bionda would close out the first quarter when they called their own numbers for sweet looking goals to give the black and gold a 3-1 lead heading into the second. Speaking of the second quarter, it would be all Penguins as they scored seven straight goals with seven different players. Piper Mott, the fellow Washington native, had the highlight goal of this run where she juked out defenders finishing by rocketing one between the goalies' leg for her fifth goal of the year.

Junior Nora White logged some solid minutes for the Pengs. She would close out the half by scoring her first goal of the season receiving a nice dish from teammate Alayna Cipolla. Morgan Newkirk would have the lone point in the third when she connected on a free-position shot.

Dominican's defense was on lock the whole game, constantly putting pressure on the Catawba offense. Olivia Johnson and Chelsea Johnson led the team in caused turnovers coming up with two apiece. Both Natalie Oyler and Katherine Chavez split time in the cage for the black and gold and orchestrated the defense nicely throughout the game. Chavez, the senior out of Tustin, came up with a game high six saves.

The Penguins will continue their road trip as they head to Converse College March. 14th at 1 p.m. EST
