SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis continued to show improvement as it dispatched Fresno Pacific 6-1 Sunday morning at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
After Halle Faherty and Jessica McClean captured a 6-2 victory in No. 2 doubles for the Sunbirds (3-1), it was an overwhelming wave for the Penguins (5-1) the rest of the way. Sofia Acuña and
Kaylee Lopez won No. 1 doubles 6-2 to even the segment with
Ana Rios and
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja securing the doubles point for Dominican with a 6-2 win on the third court.
Lorenza Foster-Simbulan cruised 6-0 in the first set at No. 6 singles and her opponent retired early to push the Penguins ahead 2-0 in the match.
Kaylee Lopez topped Jessica McClean 6-3, 6-2 in No. 4 singles to keep the momentum rolling, but Yume Ueoku got one back for FPU with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on the second court. Vanaraja clinched the match on the third court as she beat Faherty 6-1, 6-2 with her doubles partner Rios adding a 6-2, 7-5 victory moments later.
Maria Gavrilov added the cherry on top of the victory bouncing back from an opening set 6-4 loss to Fabiana Gonzalez to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-0.
Dominican faces its stiffest challenge to date Friday as it heads to Stockton to take on Pacific at 11 a.m. PST at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
