Penguins take care of business at home

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis returned home for a 6-1 victory over American River College on Friday afternoon at Castelluci Family Tennis Center.

Maya Cooper and Sofia Acuña set the tone for the match as they claimed a dominant 6-0 victory in No. 3 doubles for the Penguins (4-1). Ana Rios and Deepalakshmi Vanaraja teamed up for a 6-2 victory in No. 2 doubles to clinch the team point for Dominican with Lorenza Foster-Simbulan and Maria Gavrilov finishing minutes later with a 6-2 victory in No. 1 doubles for the Penguins.

A late scratch left Dominican without a player for No. 6 singles handing the Otters (3-2) their only team point of the match, but Foster-Simbulan quickly took care of business with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles to put Dominican back in front 2-1 for the match. Gavrilov finished closely behind her doubles partner with a 6-1, 6-3 victory on the top court over Nica Sobrepena to put the Penguins one match away from the clinch.

They did not have to wait long as Rios dispatched of Miya Ho 6-0, 6-3 on the fourth court to hand her team the victory. Vanaraja topped Subha Patel 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles to keep the momentum rolling. Cooper got a second victory over her former team as she defeated Carmen Micsa 6-4, 6-1 in No. 5 singles to put the cherry on top of the victory for Dominican.

The Penguins turn their attention to Fresno Pacific for a Sunday match at Castellucci Family Tennis Center at 10 a.m. PST pending weather conditions.
