HONOLULU – Dominican women's tennis defeated Chaminade 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Diamond Head Tennis Center for its first victory on its trip to the islands.
Maria Gavrilov and
Lorenza Foster-Simbulan paired for the Penguins (2-0) first victory of the afternoon topping the Silverswords' (0-2) Kirra Caravalho and Hannah Lewis 6-1 to open doubles play.
Maya Cooper and
Bernadine Salvatierra claimed No. 3 doubles 6-1 minutes later over Selena Buttery and Danica Palmer to put Dominican ahead 1-0 in the team score.
Foster-Simbulan kept the momentum rolling in singles as she quickly topped Caravalho 6-0, 6-0. Cooper defeated Buttery 6-1, 6-3 in No. 5 singles with Salvatierra claiming a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Palmer to seal the team victory. Sofia Acuña won No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1 with Gavrilov taking No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-3 to put the Penguins a match from the sweep.
Ana Rios and Isabella Minaudo played the closest match of the afternoon with Rios pulling away for a 6-3 victory in the first set, before holding on for a 7-5 victory in set two to complete the sweep.
Dominican will conclude its 3-day trip to the Hawaii as it faces University of Hawai'i at Hilo at Kailua Racquet Club at 11 a.m. Hawaiian Time.
