Penguins fall in close battle with Sharks

HONOLULU – Dominican women's tennis fell 4-3 to Hawai'i Pacific on Monday at Kailua Racquet Club in a tightly contested match.

The Sharks (3-2) quickly gained an edge in the match as Tereza Noah and Willow Dymokowski won in No. 2 doubles 6-0 with Annika Hakovirta and Evi Roobol sealing the doubles point minutes later with a 6-0 victory on the top court. The Penguins (2-1) answered quickly in the singles portion of the match Maria Gavrilov topped Kayleigh Castillo 6-0, 6-3 to knot the match up at 1-1.

Noah claimed No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-2 for HPU to retake the lead as the remainder of the singles matches remained highly competitive. Rosa Viller Moeller edged Lorenza Foster Simbulan 6-4, 6-3 in No. 5 singles to put the sharks a match away from the victory with Roobol doing the same in No. 1 singles to clinch the match.

Dominican showed it wasn't far from victory itself with Ana Rios outlasting Kaia Sperry 7-5, 3-6, 14-12 in a marathon match at No. 6 singles. Kaylee Lopez was equally impressive in the clutch for Dominican topping Hokovirta 7-6 (7), 4-6, 11-9 to claim No. 4 singles.
