Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Penguins drop a close one to the Golden Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball (7-5, 2-4) continued their home stand Saturday afternoon when they welcomed in the Golden Eagles of Concordia University Irvine for a PacWest showdown. Senior guards Nick Medeiros and Darius Best led the way offensively for the Pengs going for a combined 41 points, but it was CUI who snuck away with the 70 to 65 victory.

The Golden Eagles would start this game fast jumping out to an early lead until Medeiros got his day started by hitting a wide-open trey assisted on the play by Best. This three would ignite a Penguins run that saw Mo Toure and Stephen Ransom cash in on hard driving lay-ups. Medeiros would cap off the first half run with a smooth looking lay-up of his own tying the game at 21.

Best would heat up late in the first half by showing his offensive arsenal first by hitting a step-back then on the ensuing possession he would leave the Golden Eagles defense in the dust scoring off a fastbreak lay-up. The North Carolina native would send the Pengs into the lockers for half on a high note as he scored on a driving lay-up with five seconds left. Dominican would end the first half shooting 50% from the field while shooting 40% from behind the arc.

CUI would flip the script in the second half as their leading scorer Macarhy Morris caught fire scoring the first couple of buckets for the Golden Eagles. The Pengs would do a good job of forcing the CUI defense to send them to the line in the second half. Medeiros collected a game high 21 points while knocking down a game high nine free throws. Best was right behind his backcourt mate finishing with 20 points while going an efficient 7 for 10 from the field.

Late in the second half Dominican would have a three-point lead with two minutes to go thanks to a nice lay-up from Best. The Golden Eagles defense would lock in after that as CUI went on a 8-0 run to end the game.

The Pengs will be back on the court Jan.8th as they welcome in Hawaii Hilo at 7:30 p.m.
