HONOLULU, Hawaii- Dominican men's basketball (9-7, 4-6) concluded their Hawaiian road trip facing off against the Silverswords of Chaminade University Saturday night on the big island. Senior
Darius Best paved the way for Dominican offensively as he dropped a game high 24 points while dishing out a team high five assists. Despite Best's efforts on the offensive side of the ball, Chaminade found a way to close it out at the end winning 85 to 83.
Best, the North Carolina native, was aggressive from the jump as he collected a couple of early buckets early on forcing the Silverswords to burn a timeout. He gave Chaminade's defense fits all night as they had no answer for his smooth looking jumper. Best would finish the game not missing a shot from the floor as he went a perfect 8 for 8 while also going an efficient 7 for 8 from the charity stripe.
This game was back and forth throughout the night, and when the Penguins found themselves down double digits midway through the second half, they didn't blink. The duo of Best and teammate
Nick Medeiros helped sparked a comeback with Best doing it from the mid-range and Medeiros driving it hard in the paint for some easy lay-ups. Medeiros, the Vallejo native, posted 14 points while grabbing six boards.
Stephen Ransom got the start for the Pengs and didn't disappoint as he brought constant energy on both ends of the court. He collected eight rebounds, and a couple came in the critical moments giving Dominican an extra offensive possession when they needed it.
Jorge Ochoa was the leader in the rebound department as he collected a game high 10 while finishing one point shy of a double-double.
Dominican will return to action Jan 24
th when they travel to Jessup at 3:30 p.m.
