Penguins leave no doubt against the Silverswords

HONOLULU – Dominican women's basketball steadily pulled away Saturday night in a 94-64 victory over Chaminade at McCabe Gym.

Isobel Crosswhite came off the bench and tied her career-high with 25 points to go with six rebounds and a blocked shot for the Penguins  (13-3, 7-3 PacWest). Mahliya Wilson found some of her early season form scoring 19 points on an efficient 46.2% shooting while adding six rebounds and three steals. Alyssa Schuetze led the Silverswords (0-12, 0-9 PacWest) with 21 points and eight rebounds. Dominican was efficient all around hitting 52.4% of its shots while holding Chaminade to 34.4% shooting.

The Silverswords grabbed an early lead as Schuetze grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back before Selena Buttery knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 7-5 with 8:21 remaining. Keyonee Neal drilled a 3-pointer on the next possession to retake the lead for the Penguins and Kaylyn Buchanon drove the lane for a layup to cap a 6-0 run that pushed their lead to 11-7 less than a minute later. Schuetze tied the game with four straight points midway through the first with Holly Dolny connected on a pair from the charity stripe to take a 15-13 lead heading into the final four minutes of the period. Chaminade held the lead for the next few minutes, but Wilson hit a short jumper and then found Neal driving for two more with the foul to take a 20-18 lead.  After Crosswhite was fouled, the Silverswords coach was given a pair of technicals and ejected from the game with Crosswhite hitting 5-of-6 attempts from the line to extend the lead. Wilson then hit a baseline floater to cap the 12-0 run and take a 27-18 lead.

After Chaminade cut the gap to five heading to the second quarter, Crosswhite hit a jumper to open the second quarter with Aryn Bright adding a pull up jumper in transition to push the lead back to nine. Buchanon found Crosswhite on the block and she hit a turnaround jumper to push the lead to double-digits for the first time at 35-25 with 6:43 left in the half. Crosswhite and the Penguins continued to do damage in the paint during the 14-point burst with Crosswhite scoring four more points including a layup off a dish from Wilson to push the lead to 44-25 with 2:33 left in the period. Ashley Holen hit a 3-pointer to end the run and Chaminade cut the deficit to 44-30 but Wilson took a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a layup to send Dominican into the break leading by 16.

Wilson stole the ball and took it the other way for a layup to open the scoring in the second half to keep the Penguins momentum going. Schutze again tried to will her team back into the game driving the lane for back-to-back layups to get back within 15, but Aryn Bright found Wilson for a layup then stole the ball and hit a layup in transition off an assist from Neal to take the 57-38 lead. Wilson pushed the lead to 20 for the first time after scoring four points of a 6-0 run as Dominican began to really pull away. The Penguins bench got quality minutes in the fourth quarter as they helped extend the lead as high as 34 points behind the scoring prowess of Crosswhite.

Dominican will return to California to take on Jessup at Warrior Arena in Rocklin with tipoff set for 1 p.m. PST.
