ROCKLIN, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball build a large led early and never looked back in a 69-50 victory Saturday afternoon over Jessup at Warrior Arena.
Keyonee Neal led the Penguins (14-3, 8-3 PacWest) with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while
Mahliya Wilson finished with 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. Aniah Cross had a game-high 21 points to go with 10 rebounds, but was the only double-figure scorer for the Warriors (5-13, 3-9 PacWest). Dominican played fantastic defense holding Jessup to 28.4% shooting for the game.
Julianne Cotterill grabbed an offensive board and kicked it out to
Alyssa Alvarado for the first basket of the game as the 3-pointers fell early for the Penguins. Alvarado then found
Kaylyn Buchanon behind the arc for another 3-pointer as Dominican opened the game on a 12-2 run. Dominican maintained its lead until
Aryn Bright cleaned the offensive glass before finding Neal for a 3-pointer to spark a 7-point run to end the quarter as
Adia Walker beat the buzzer to push the lead to 22-7.
Andehya Aurelio propelled a 6-0 Warrior run as she found Porter Wood for a layup before scoring the next four points herself to cut the deficit to 26-17 with 2:46 remaining. Wilson found a lane and attacked the paint the next possession to halt the momentum before finding
Isobel Crosswhite under the hoop for a layup and foul as Dominican pushed the lead back to 15 in the span of a minute. Buchanon raced down the court to beat the buzzer right before the half to send Dominican to the locker room leading 34-20.
Cross connected on a 3-pointer and once again a small run helped Jessup close back within 9 with 7:35 remaining in the third. Dominican began to push in transition finding Cotterill running the floor three times before Buchanon found
Alyssa Alvarado all alone after a steal to cap off a 12-0 run that extended Dominican's lead to 48-27 with 4:05 remaining in the quarter. The Warriors wouldn't go down without a fight as Hailey Hoff and Cross each connected from behind the arc with Cross adding three more points to end the quarter to pull Jessup to a 54-41 deficit heading into the final period.
Wilson took control in the fourth quarter scoring four points and finding Crosswhite for an open layup to push the lead back to 20 within the first three minutes of the fourth. It was all downhill from there as the Penguins maintained their lead as the bench saw major minutes down the stretch.
Dominican will return home to take on Menlo at 5:30 p.m. PST Monday at the Conlan Recreation Center.
