Schwan and Moore connect in the clutch

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Ayla Moore and Janae Schwan came through in the clutch for Dominican women's soccer in a 1-1 tie with Cal State East Bay on Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Ysabella Belandres worked her way to the top of the box in the fourth minute and deked a defender to the ground to create space for a left footed shot at the bottom left corner of the goal, but Ashley Levi made the diving save for the Pioneers (0-1-1). In the 13th minute, a free kick for the Penguins (1-0-1) into the box found the foot of Emma Wilson who attempted to pop the ball over defenders to an empty spot of the net, but a defender tracked it and headed it away from the goal line to keep a clean sheet.

Abigail Kern got the first real chance of the game for the Pioneers five minutes into the second half as she drove down the left side cut back in across the top of the box speeding around a defender before sending a right footed shot across her body to the bottom right corner for the 1-0 lead. The battle in the midfield continued for 30 more minutes until a corner kick in the 83rd minute fell to Julissa Pena who aimed towards the bottom middle of the net, but Levi was there to make the save. One minute later another Penguin corner was punched out where Carson Warfield sent a shot screaming towards the goal, but it hit the right post.

In 86th Dominican earned another corner, and Schwan placed it perfectly in the center of the box for Moore who headed it down inside the right post to tie the game 1-1. The Penguins pushed to take the lead earning corners and free kicks in dangerous positions over the final four minutes, but the game ended in a draw.

Dominican finished with nine shots with five on goal while also earning nine corners in the game. Michelle Salas Viniegra moved to 1-0-1 on the year after making two saves in net for the Penguins.

Dominican will have a quick turnaround as it heads south to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday at 3 p.m. PDT at Cardinale Stadium.
