SEASIDE, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer an offensive onslaught in the second half by Cal State Monterey Bay to earn a 1-1 draw Wednesday afternoon at Cardinale Stadium.
The Penguins (1-0-2) applied pressure early as in the second minute they saved a ball at the end line from going out, but a subsequent cross was cut out by the Otter (1-0-2) defense. The ball bounced back to the foot of
Megan Clapinski at the top of the box who took a touch to her right and fired a shot that squeezed under the arms of Willow Baltazar for the 1-0 lead.
Fatima Waldo Garcia had a shot on goal in the 31st and 32nd minutes after coming off the bench to keep the pressure on Baltazar, but she made the saves to keep her team close. The Penguin defense was stellar throughout the first half as CSUMB did not get a single shot on frame and was without a single shot attempt until the 42nd minute and Dominican lead 1-0 at the break.
Janae Schwan had two looks at goal early in the second half just seconds apart forcing Linnea Sybersma who came on in relief of Baltazar to make a save in the 51st minute. The Otters began to found an offensive groove one minute later as a ball over the top found Juliana Dow down the right side of the box, but
Michelle Salas Viniegra made the diving save to her right to prevent the ball from entering inside the back post.
A yellow card in the 56th minute set up a dangerous free kick for the Penguins and
Jenna Pevenage was able to put the ball on goal, but Sybersma made the save to keep the score unchanged.
Emma Wilson also tried to put a ball over the top of Sybersma in the 65th minute but Sybersma made yet another save and the Otters capitalized as an individual effort by Danielle Castro earned them the equalizer in the 66th minute.
Kaylie Fowler looked to give the Otters a lead in the 68th minute, but Salas Viniegra once again made a brilliant save in the one-on-one battle. Salas Viniegra made two more saves over the next eight minutes as CSUMB had all the momentum.
Julisa Pena finally ended the Otter onslaught as she tested Sybersma in the 83rd minute and Dow managed one more shot on Salas Viniegra in the 87th, but the goalkeepers kept their goals clean and the game ended in a tie.
Dominican will return home to face Saint Martin's on Friday at 1 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
