Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Penguins battle Oaks in home opener

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- After eleven straight matches on the road, Dominican women's volleyball played in front of their home crowd Saturday night as they hosted the Oaks of Menlo College. This was a non conference match-up as both teams used this match to get ready for PacWest play starting in a couple weeks.

The Oaks came out fast in this one winning the first two sets led by Fuka Kikuchi who finished the night with 14 kills.

Dominican would put a halt to the Oaks momentum in the third set as they were the ones who came out with a purpose. The Pengs would jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in set three thanks to consecutive kills by senior Lauren Wiley and junior Ashlyn Daugherty. Then midway through the set fellow junior Braenwynne Matthews slammed home a pair of kills giving the Pengs their biggest lead of the night. Matthews, the Idaho native, led Dominican in the offensive department posting 10 kills to go along with seven digs.

Kendal Kibanoff would force a set error on the Oaks to wrap up the third set for the Pengs 25-19. Speaking of Kibanoff, she finished the match with a game high 20 digs. The sophomore duo of Chloe Cruz and Kali Young were everywhere on the court for Dominican as Cruz dished out a team high 15 assists while Young brought down a team high five blocks.

The Penguins will be back in action Sep. 30th when they host Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. The first 100 people in attendance wearing black will receive free food from Forrest BBQ as the team honors first responders.
