SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Megan Clapinski's pinpoint accuracy in the second half lifted Dominican women's soccer to a 1-1 tie against Chico State on Thursday at Kennelly Field.
The game was evenly matched for most of the night with the Wildcats (1-2-2) holding narrow advantages in shots (12-8) and shots on goal (5-4), but the Penguins controlled much of the possession and tempo earning a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Dominican controlled possession early but it was Chico State that found space for a pair of shots. Hannah Pieri had a dangerous shot, the first of the game, as a ball went across the face of goal avoiding several feet on the way through to find Pieri all alone to the left of the penalty spot, but her attempt went high. The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 19th minute as a ball into the box was mishandled allowing Olivia Hohnstein to have a look at an open net and she buried the right footed shot for the 1-0 lead.
Janae Schwan had a good look at tying the game for the Penguins in the 23rd minute as she navigated across the top of the box and sent a ball towards the far post, but it was collected by Claire Schnabel. Pieri had another dangerous scoring for Chico State as her shot deflected off a defender towards the goal, but
Michelle Salas Viniegra was able to clear it from her net to keep her team within reach.
After a largely uneventful start to the second half,
Fatima Waldo Garcia played a ball back to Clapinski in space and she immediately took the shot from 30-yards out sending it out of the reach of Schnabel and into the upper right corner to tie the game 1-1 in the 68th minute. In the 71st minute, a ball in the box bounced around dangerously ultimately finding
Jenna Pevenage who took a touch to her right and blasted a shot near post, but Schnabel made a brilliant diving save to keep the game tied.
The Penguins continued to make dangerous runs into the box, but the Wildcats spoiled the last pass each time. Pieri took a shot for Chico State in the 81st minute going near post, but Salas Viniegra had it covered well for the save. The Wildcats made some dangerous runs in the final five minutes but found the same success as Dominican over the previous five minutes with the back lines keeping the game tied.
Dominican will hit the road once more before conference play begins as it takes on San Francisco State at noon PDT at Cox Stadium on Saturday.
