SAN FRANCISCO – Dominican women's soccer remained unbeaten heading into conference play with a 1-1 tie Saturday against San Francisco State at Cox Stadium.
The Penguins (2-0-4) held narrow advantages over the Gators (0-3-2) in shots (17-14) and shots on goal (7-6) with almost all other stats being equal.
Fatima Waldo Garcia had her first goal at Dominican with
Angelina Hert collecting five saves in the first half.
San Francisco State was on the attack early as Hert faced three shots in the first 10 minutes but made three saves to keep a clean sheet.
Megan Clapinski challenged Kylie Tonie in the 16th minute with a low shot, but Tonie collected the save. Hert made two more saves on shots from Ashlynn Jones in the 17th and 24th minutes to keep her team in the game.
Waldo Garcia entered into the match in the 32nd minute and one minute later made an impact as
Ayla Moore was able to put a shot off the top woodwork and the ball rebounded back to Waldo Garcia who put it home for the 1-0 Penguin lead. The Penguin defense began to make life difficult for the Gators as the backline did not allow another shot on frame for the remainder of the half.
Dominican applied offensive pressure in the second half with four shots and two corner kicks in the first ten minutes of the period. Emily Gehrlein-Allen had the first shot of the second half for San Francisco State in the 64th minute but it was blocked on the way through as the Penguins clung to its slim lead. After 15 uneventful minutes a yellow card gave the Gators a free kick in a dangerous area and Maya Stinson made the most of it as she tied the game 1-1 in the 79th minute.
Ysabella Belandres wasted no time trying to give her team back the lead as she tested Tonie to the bottom right corner on a shot in the 81st minute, but Tonie collected the save. Tonie was fantastic down the stretch making three saves over the final seven minutes to earn a result for her team.
Dominican will open conference play Wednesday as it hosts University of Hawai'i at Hilo at 12:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
