CHICO, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer had an offensive explosion in its return to California as it topped Chico State 4-1 Thursday night at University Soccer Stadium.
Anthony Stainer led the way for the Penguins (2-3-0) with a goal and an assist on the day. The Wildcats (2-2-1) held an 18-12 advantage in shots, but
Colin Nestor was too good in the net turning away eight shots for Dominican to earn his second victory of the season.
Stainer opened the scoring in the 11th minute as he faced up a defender on the right side, deked past him up the field and sent a low shot inside the back post for the 1-0 Penguin lead. Elijah Beverley looked to draw the Wildcats back even two minutes later as he took a quick turn inside the box, but Nestor made a diving save to his left to keep the lead. Chico State got the equalizer in the 18th minute as Dane Peterson won a ball in the attacking third and sent a cross in from the left side to the head of Michael Gray for the goal. Nestor made back-to-back saves in the 40th minute as Xavier Elder was able to find room inside the box and the half ended in a tie.
The Penguins struck quickly in the second half as Ricardo Moldonado found
Brandon Selway in the box for a header that was initially saved by the goalkeeper, but Selway was right there to clean up the rebound for the 2-1 lead. The lead grew to 3-1 in the 53rd minute as miscommunication between a defender and the keeper on a back pass saw the ball head into the net for an own goal.
Sergio Laguna intercepted a pass and quickly moved up the field with a numbers advantage passing to Stainer in the middle of the field who quickly moved it to Alejandro Amaya-Suarez on the right side who took a step to his right past the keeper and sent the ball inside the near post for the 4-1 lead. The Wildcats furiously looked for an answer, but Nestor was there to shut them down with three more saves to earn the victory.
Dominican will return home Saturday to host Stanislaus State at 3:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
