ARCATA, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball hit the road again this time traveling up north to compete in the two-day Redwood Coast Volleyball Classic hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt. The Penguins squared off against Chico State and Oklahoma Baptist Friday, and will conclude with Oklahoma Christian and Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday.
CHICO STATE 3, DUC 1
The black and gold had the first match of the day facing off against the Wildcats of Chico State at 9 a.m. The Penguins didn't waste no time waking up as they would claim the first set in a thrilling fashion winning 26-24.
Freshman
Cierra Ray collected the first points for the Pengs when she found a soft spot in the defense and slammed home a kill off a nice dish from teammate
Chloe Cruz. Fellow freshman
Alexis Schwartz, coming off a big debut last weekend, stopped the Wildcats momentum midway through the set when she fired one past the defense this time off a nice dish from
Sophia Bernabe to tie the score. Schwartz would finish the match with a team high 10 kills while Sophomore
Reese Bozak was right behind her with seven.
The Pengs would get a two-point lead later in the set when their defense shut down the Wildcats on a kill attempt thanks to the duo of
Ashlyn Daugherty and
Cierra Ray coming down with a huge block. Schwartz would then slam home one of her 10 kills to seal the set win for Dominican.
Cruz and Bernabe were all over the court for the Pengs in this one as Cruz would dish out 15 assists while Bernabe digged out a team high 16.
Kaylee Noa was right behind her with 10 digs with a team high three aces.
OKLA. BAPTIST 3, DUC 0
The Penguins wrapped up their Friday action squaring off against the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist University. Junior
Braenwynne Matthews had an efficient match for Dominican as she would lead the team in kills with eight to go along with eight digs.
Every time the Bison would go on a little run, the Pengs would answer thanks to the duo of Matthews and teammate
Kiara Milar. Matthews would slam them home while Milar kept feeding her well timed assists. Milar, the Las Vegas native, posted a team high 12 assists. Sophomore
Melena Wong was right behind her dishing out nine to go with six digs.
