SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's soccer was back on home turf Friday afternoon and treated their fans to an offensive explosion against the Saints of Saint Martin's University. The Penguins (2-0-2) started fast and didn't let go of the brakes as they shutout the Saints 6-0.
Senior leader
Megan Clapinski didn't give the fans time to settle into their seats when she rocketed one past the goalkeeper one minute into the game for the early 1-0 lead. This year's squad wants to put pressure on the opponent early and often and it was on display throughout the game against the Saints.
Fifteen minutes after Clapinski's goal, the Pengs were on the attack again led by junior transfer
Carson Warfield who juked out defenders then dished a dime to teammate
Ysabella Belandres who capitalized with a nice touch placing one in the back of the net doubling Dominican's lead.
The Pengs offense was clicking on all cylinders Friday afternoon, but their defense was also on display as they made life tough for the Saints allowing four shots in the first half. Goalie
Michelle Salas Viniegra commanded her defense well while coming up with five saves.
Sophomore
Brisa Navarrete joined the scoring party when she received a nice cross from teammate
Julisa Pena showing off her right foot for the goal. Then just after halftime, Belandres returned the favor diming up
Janae Schwan who sent one past the goalie for her first goal of the season.
Dominican would score their fifth goal of the day off a nice set play from a free kick taken by Schwan. The junior transfer floated the free kick beautifully past the Saints defense allowing teammate
Ayla Moore to run under it and flick it to
Jenna Pevenage for the goal. Fellow junior
Kamaya Yazzie finished off the scoring in this one when she scored off a hustle play from teammate
Maxine Fuhrer who never quit on the play.
The Penguins will be back in action Sept. 18
th when they host Chico State at 3 p.m.
