Acuña fights back to earn clinch for Penguins

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 4 seed Dominican women's tennis held off No. 9 seed Stanislaus State for a 4-2 victory Friday morning at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.

There was not much drama in doubles play as Gina Dudley and Deepalakshmi Vanaraja dominated No. 3 doubles with a 6-0 victory for the Penguins (14-3). Logan Koitka and Astrid Craig were close behind with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles to claim the team point for Dominican, while Audrey Rafols and Sofia Acuña were leading 5-2 at the time of the clinch.

The Warriors (12-7) were able to even the score in singles as Annabelle Mulick won 6-1, 6-0, but the momentum was short lived as Audrey Rafols claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory moments later at No. 1 singles to push the Penguins back into the lead. Parker Orlando briefly tied the team score for Stanislaus State as she won 6-2, 6-4 in No. 6 singles, but Dominican answered as Vanaraja won the final three games at No. 5 singles to claim a 6-3, 6-4 victory. 

The last two matches remaining were No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Emma Yu took the opening set over Dudley 6-4 on the second court, but Dudley found her footing during the break and quickly responded with a 6-2 victory in the second set to force a third. Two courts away, Acuña overcame a late deficit to rally and tie the set 6-6 sending it to a tiebreaker. Maiah White started strong take a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker and had set point at 6-2, but Acuña won the next six points to take the tiebreaker and the 7-6 victory. Acuña faced a similar situation in the second set as she trailed 4-3 late but got a break and held serve with four consecutive points to lead 5-4. Acuña would not be denied as she continued her streak to of points won to eight earning a second consecutive break to win 6-4. Dudley was standing by to pick her up as she led 5-0 and was on the cusp of clinching as well when the match ended.

Dominican will play in the fifth place match Saturday as it seeks to avenge its only regular season loss as it faces No. 3 seed Concordia University Irvine at 9 a.m. at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
