SURPRISE, Calif. – No. 4 seed Dominican women's tennis fell 4-3 in an extremely hard-fought match with No. 3 seed Concordia at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
The Penguins (14-4) claimed the first match of doubles as
Audrey Rafols paired with Sofia Acuña for the 6-1 victory. The Golden Eagles (15-10) got off to a strong start in the other two doubles with Jessica Bear and Alicia Da Re winning 6-1 in No. 2 doubles before Kristyna Dvorakova and Cheyenne Houkes took a 6-3 victory in No. 3 singles to earn the team point.
No. 35 Rafols helped Dominican even the score in singles play as she won 6-1, 6-2 over Sophi Rachor, but Bear claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory to give CUI the lead once again. Da Re was able to get the Golden Eagles a match from the clinch with a 6-0, 6-3 victory, but
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja overcame an early deficit to win 7-5, 6-3 and give the Penguins a boost of momentum.
Astrid Craig utilized that boost to shake off a 7-5 loss in her first set, winning 6-1, 6-3 in the next two to tie the match at 3-3.
The crowd gathered to watch No. 2 singles where Bryn Johnson won the first set 6-2, but
Gina Dudley responded with a late break before holding serve to take the 6-4 decision in the second set. Dudley went up 4-1, but Johnson broke serve to flip two games before tying the match on her own serve at 4-4. Each player held serve over the next four games sending the match to a tiebreaker. Johnson took the first three points, but Dudley answered with three consecutive points to tie it up at the switch. Johnson was able to build a small lead and hold on for the 7-6 (5) victory to seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.
