Penguins split double-header with Sharks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican softball hosted the Sharks of Hawaii Pacific for a double-header Friday afternoon. HPU was able to cool down the Penguins bats in the first game, but in the second game of the afternoon the Pengs flipped the script led by their two-way player Taylor Rodriguez. Dominican will be back on the field tomorrow to wrap up their regular season home game along with honoring their seniors. Senior ceremonies for senior day will start tomorrow at 11:40 am on the field.

DUC 0, HPU 4

In the first game of the day, it was all Sharks as they collected a total of nine hits with one big fly courtesy of Danielle Cote. Taylor Thompson made life tough for the Penguin hitters as she went the distance earning a complete game with five strikeouts.

Sophomore Tiare Guerrero continued her strong 2025 campaign for Dominican as she collected a team high 3 hits going a perfect three for three in this one. Melissa Garcia, the Pengs starting center fielder was right behind Guerrero in hits tallying two.

DUC, 8 HPU 3

The Penguins flipped the script in the second game of the day against the Sharks, jumping on them early and not letting up. Rodriguez, the team leader in wins this season, got the nod on the bump for the Pengs and had a quick 1-2-3 first inning. The Livermore native is also a two-way player so when she came to the plate in the bottom of the first with a runner on, she knew what to do. After seeing the first pitch for a strike, Rodriguez blasted the second pitch of the at-bat for a towering two-run homerun.

HPU would get back into the ballgame thanks to a two-run shot from Makayla Pagampao to tie the game. It was a pitcher's duel from that point until the Pengs came to bat in the bottom of the fifth. Kelissa Lee led off the inning with a screamer down the left field line for a double and would score on a Guerrero single. Lee and Guerrero each had two hits in this one.
After a couple of defensive miscues from the Sharks the Pengs were leading by two when senior Alicia Garcia stepped into the box. Garcia, the Glendora native, ripped a double to center field scoring teammate Taylor Eby. Peyton Oas would continue this inning with a single and a rbi of her own making it 6-2 Penguins.

That was more than enough run support for Rodriguez as she would go the distance for her 16th victory of the season. She also flashed her versatility by collecting a team high three hits.
