Penguins take series with a pair of walk off hits

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Taylor Eby came through for the second straight day for Dominican softball with a walk-off single to take the 4-3 win in the first game versus Jessup on Saturday with Kate Tobola provided the game-ending double in the second for an 8-0 win at Penguin Field.

Tobola was brilliant at the plate going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Rodriguez moved to 15-5 with her sixth shutout of the season while also going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Nayellys Torres-Gonzalez moved to 6-6 after pitching three innings in relief and allowing one earned run to earn the victory in the first game.

Game one
Dominican started strong once again as Kassidy Stetler retired the side and Tobola walked to lead off the bottom of the inning. After Tobola advanced on a pair of groundouts, Annabelle Burke brought her home as she singled just inside the left-field line to take the 1-0 lead.

Stetler continued her hot start retiring the next six Warriors she faced with some help from her defense as Kelissa Lee snagged a line drive sure to hit the center field fence with a leaping grab to rob the double before Tiare Guerrero back handed a ball in the hole and through to first for another web gem.

The Warriors (26-20, 18-11) saw better success their second time around the lineup as Maddy Ybarra followed a leadoff walk and a single with a single to center to drive in the tying run. Kylie Nunes brought in a second run on sacrifice fly to take the 2-1 lead and Stetler caught the last batter looking on strike three to escape the top of the fourth inning.

Jessup looked poised to add a run in the top of the fifth with Torres-Gonzalez in the circle, but after Ybarra reached safely at first, Olivia Dominguez got caught off the bag at third base and Guerrero tagged her out on the ensuing pickle to end the frame. Sarah Giles homered to lead off the top of the sixth to extend the Warriors lead to two, but Torres Gonzalez struck out two to quickly retire the next three batters.

Burke walked and Melissa Garcia singled to center to lead off the bottom of the sixth with both advancing into scoring position on a flyout to put the tying run in scoring position, but relief pitcher Jazlyn Villavicencio escaped the inning on a flyout to maintain the lead. Dominican held the Warriors scoreless in the top of the seventh to have one last chance to tie or take the lead in the game.

After Villavicencio retired the first batter on a groundout, Payton Oas singled on a ball between the pitcher and third base and Tobola was hit by a pitch to put a pair on the tying run on the base paths. Rodriguez came in off the bench to pinch hit and sent a line drive just above the leaping glove of Nunes in right field as she doubled to bring in one run. Eby stepped to the plate in yet another clutch spot in the four-game series. Eby singled to left on the first pitch she saw to bring in the tying run and the left-fielder mishandled the ball allowing a second run to cross and send the Penguins into a celebration.

Game two
Rodriguez held the Warriors in check over the first three innings and Burke sparked a two-out rally as she singled to left. Rodriguez homered to left on the first pitch she saw to give herself the 2-0 lead. Kaitlyn Aguilar drew a walk to put another runner on the bases and Lee came to the plate and sent the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center to extend the lead to 4-0.

After a clean top of the fourth for Rodriguez, Oas singled down the third-base line and Tobola singled on a perfect bunt between home and the circle. Alicia Garcia loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch and Burke drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to center to take the 5-0 lead.

Rodriguez left another runner stranded in the top of the fifth and Kaitlyn Aguilar singled on a sharp line drive to center field to lead off the bottom of the frame. Melissa Garcia then singled up the middle and Oas singled to center field with a run scoring on an error in left. Tobola watched two balls before seeing her pitch and doubling off the fence in left field to bring home two and end the game.

Dominican will stay home to host Hawai'i Pacific for the last home series of 2025 beginning with a Friday doubleheader at Penguin Field with first pitch at noon PDT.
