Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Lane lifts Penguins to victory in final seconds

ST. JOSEPHS, Mo.- Dominican women's lacrosse bounced back in a huge way after their first loss of the season defeating the Griffons of Missouri Western State University in the final seconds Monday afternoon. With one second left in regulation and the game tied at 11, sophomore Julianne Lane received the ball off a nice dish from teammate Olivia Johnson and fired a missile past the goalie that hit the back of the net for the game winning goal. This thrilling victory now gives Dominican 10 wins on the season in their first year in NCAA DII.

Freshman sensation Kyra Evans led the Pengs in the scoring department going for a game high four goals while also collecting four draw controls. Evans, the San Diego native has been a solid contributor all season as she is up to 14 goals and counting on the year. Sienna Fairbanks opened the scoring in this back-and-forth battle when she called her own number 50 seconds into the game.
Then to end the first quarter it was another freshman finding the back of the net to give Dominican a one-point advantage. Piper Mott, the Washington native, found a soft spot in the Griffons defense and made them pay by rocketing one past the goalie for her sixth goal of the season. Midway through the second, Lane scored her first goal of the day to stop a quick run by the Griffons. As halftime hit, the Griffons held an 8-6 lead.

Dominican opened the third with a little run of their own as back-to-back goals from Taylor Pieri and Evans had the game all tied at eight. Evans continued to stay hot in the second half as she would start the last quarter with two consecutive goals leaving the Griffons defense shaking their head. With four minutes to go in the game Caetryn Gilreath found the back of the net which tied things at eleven. After that, both defenses tightened things up and it looked like overtime as calling. However, Lane had other plans as she called game with one second left.

Starting goalie Natalie Oyler was once again rock solid in the cage for Dominican as she collected a game high 13 saves. Johnson led the team in ground balls with three and draw controls winning six of them.

The Pengs will wrap up their regular season tomorrow April 1st at 11 a.m. CDT when they travel to William Jewell College.
