Penguins sweep Vulcans

FRESNO, Calif. – No. 43 Dominican women's tennis continued its best season ever as it swept University of Hawai'i at Hilo 4-0 Friday afternoon at Haak Tennis Complex.

Sofia Acuña and Audrey Rafols paired for a 6-0 victory in No. 1 doubles to open the match on a strong note for the Penguins (10-3). Deepalakshmi Vanaraja and Gina Dudley grabbed a 6-3 victory in No. 3 doubles minutes later to earn Dominican the first team point of the match.

Dudley kept it rolling in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Akari Ichikawa of the Vulcans (2-8) to take the 2-0 lead. UHH stole the opening set on the top court as McKenna Mountain claimed a 6-3 victory. No. 11 Rafols bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the second set before closing out a 6-4 victory in set three to put the Penguins a singles victory from the clinch and from victory.

No. 39 Maria Gavrilov won the opening set of No. 3 singles 6-1, but Mila Srebro bounced back to win 7-6 (4) in a tight second set. The third set mirrored the second as Gavrilov traded games to a 6-6 tie, but this time it was Gavrilov that won the tiebreaker of the 7-6 (2) victory to seal the match for her team.

Dominican will return home to host American River College on Friday at noon PDT at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
