SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's lacrosse returned home after going 3-0 on their Midwest road trip last week to face the Flyers of Lewis University Tuesday afternoon. Defense was the name of the game in this one, and the Pengs caused havoc all day for the Flyers making it now the fourth consecutive game opposing offenses have scored five points or less.
Junior
Lusi Tapasa was the anchor on the back end for Dominican as she didn't give up any ground forcing three turnovers which was tied for a game high with teammate
Olivia Johnson. Tapas also collected three ground balls. Speaking of Johnson, fresh off her MEC defensive player of the week, she was everywhere on the field Tuesday afternoon as she forced three turnovers, collected a game high seven ground balls, and won four draw controls.
With around two minutes left in the first half this was an all-defensive game with the Flyers holding a 3-0 lead. However, the Pengs would garner all the momentum after Johnson called her own number for Dominican's first point. Then it was fellow junior
Morgan Newkirk juking out defenders left and right finishing the play by putting one in the back of the net. Thirty seconds later
Julianne Lane fired one from 15 feet away and before you knew it, the game was all tied at three heading into halftime.
Dominican would feed of that energy and come out firing in the second half which led to eight goals. Newkirk, the junior out of El Cajon, would lead the Pengs in the scoring department finishing with four goals to go along with three ground balls.
Kyra Evans, a fellow San Diego native, was right behind Newkirk with two goals of her own while winning four draw controls.
The Pengs will be back on the field March 20
th for Senior Day against Lewis at 4 p.m.
