SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis swept Fresno Pacific 7-0 Friday afternoon at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
It was the second sweep of the week for the Penguins (5-1) who have won five consecutive matches after opening the season with a loss against Pacific, an NCAA Division I opponent.
Lorenza Foster-Simbulan and
Maria Gavrilov paired for the second time this season and topped their Sunbird (1-6) opponents 6-2 to open doubles play.
Gina Dudley and
Audrey Rafols secured the doubles point for Dominican as they took No. 1 singles 6-1 over Yume Ueoku and Daimy Paula.
Astrid Craig quickly made it 2-0 Penguins as she defeated Yalia Guiterrez 6-0, 6-0 in No. 6 singles. Sofia Acuña was close behind claiming a 6-0, 6-2 victory on the fifth court over Malia Mitchell and Gavrilov clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in No. 3 singles for the Penguins.
With the victory in hand, No. 27 Rafols avenged her only loss while overcoming an injury sustained in the season-opener as she topped Ueoku 6-1, 6-4 to keep the Dominican momentum rolling. Dudley dropped the first set 6-4 to Daimy Paula in No. 2 singles but bounced back with a 6-1 victory in the second set to move into a tiebreaker. Dudley took care of business with the 10-4 victory to defeat Paula.
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja sealed the sweep on No. 4 singles winning 6-3, 7-6 (2) over Halle Faherty. It was Dominican's first sweep over the Fresno Pacific and its third consecutive victory in the series that began with 13 straight Sunbird victories.
Dominican will travel to the South Bay were it will face Cal State Northridge in a neutral site competition Sunday at Spartan Tennis Complex on the campus of San Jose State.
