Penguins hold off Warriors to win sixth consecutive D2 match

TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis continued its stellar start to the 2025 season with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon over Stanislaus State at the Stan State Tennis Courts.

The match got off to a slow start for the Penguins (6-2) as Emma Yu and Annabelle Mulick won 6-2 in No. 1 doubles for the Warriors (6-3). Deepalakshmi Vanaraja and Sofia Acuña leveled the segment with a 6-3 victory in No. 3 doubles for Dominican but Alyssa Tay and Maiah White held off their Penguin counterparts in No. 2 doubles for a narrow 6-4 victory to give Stanislaus State the 1-0 lead heading to singles.

No. 27 Audrey Rafols quickly evened the team score for Dominican as she dispatched Tay 6-2, 6-0 on the top court. Acuña was close behind with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in No. 4 singles over White, but Annabelle Mulick won 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles for Stanislaus State to tie the team score 2-2. Every game remained close from there on out with Vanaraja holding off Abigail Mullick 6-4 in the first set and then established a little more breathing room in the second set for the 6-3 victory to put the Penguins a singles match away from the team victory.

Gina Dudley battled through pain in No. 2 singles gutting out a 6-3 victory in the first set over Emma Yu. Dudley continued to gut out every point of every game narrowly taking a 6-4 victory in set two to clinch the victory for her team. Parker Orlando claimed the final point of the day for the Warriors with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in No. 6 singles.

Dominican will have a week to rest up before taking its Spring Break trip to Southern California beginning with a match against Westmont on Saturday at 10 a.m. PST at Abbott Tennis Courts.
