SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball traveled down to America's Finest City and proved to the No. 10 ranked Sea Lions of Point Loma, that they were the finer team Saturday night. The Penguins (6-1) dominated the Sea Lions from the tip to the final buzzer coming out with a 92-73 victory in their conference opener. This victory Saturday night snaps a 15-game losing streak to PLNU and marks Dominican's highest ranked win since 2014 when the Pengs beat a top 10 ranked Chico State squad.
Head Coach
Justin Argenal knows how tough the Sea Lions have been, their the reigning conference champions and a nationally ranked team. Going into their house and beating them by 21-points is a statement for him and the team, letting everyone know the Penguins are here. The Pengs carried the momentum and their toughness from Tuesday night's exhibition where they led Division I University of California at half into tonight's game with the Sea Lions. Dominican outrebounded Point Loma 42-33 and had the lead the majority of the game, the Sea Lions only led for five minutes.
The senior duo of
Nick Medeiros and
Darius Best led the charge offensively for the Pengs as the Sea Lions had no answer for them all night. Medeiros, the Vallejo native, finished the game with a double-double. He went for a game high 27 points and 12 boards while also dishing out six assists. Best was one point behind his back court running mate going for 26 points while knocking down a game high four three-pointers.
Dominican's defense and hustle plays helped them gain the lead early on.
Michael Wilson gave the Sea Lions offense fits all night as he finished with a game high four steals while
Luke Ortiz swatted away two blocks. Dominican has a team allowed nothing easy inside as they totaled five blocks. The Pengs would go into halftime with a nine-point advantage and then they came out for the second half on fire going on a quick 7-0 run.
Fellow senior
Austin Johnson made his presence felt off the bench for Dominican as he posted 13 points on an efficient 5 for 6 from the field. Johnson hit some timely buckets for the Pengs in the second half to extend their big lead.
Dominican will continue their southern California road trip Monday afternoon when they square off against CUI at 3:15 p.m.
