IRVINE, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball (6-2, 1-1) wrapped up their SoCal road trip Monday afternoon with a conference showdown with the Golden Eagles of Concordia University of Irvine. The Penguins came into this PacWest tilt fresh off winning team of the week and
Nick Medeiros bringing home player of the week for their upset win over No. 10 PLNU Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles started fast in this one jumping out to a quick lead led by Kaden Minter.
Michael Wilson, the junior out of Sacramento, would halt the Golden Eagles momentum when he stepped into a wide-open trey midway through the first.
Jorge Ochoa would help his teammate in the scoring department finding the soft spots in the CUI defense towards the end of the first half collecting nice buckets on back-to-back offensive possessions.
CUI would take 10-point lead going into halftime and in the second half their offense continued to click seeing four players finish with double-digits. Senior
Austin Johnson led the offensive attack for the Pengs this afternoon finishing with a season high 17 points while going a perfect 7 for 7 from the charity stripe. Johnson, the Richmond native, brings great energy off the bench for Dominican and against the Golden Eagles he constantly drove the ball into the paint forcing them to send him to the line.
Wilson finished the game second on the team in scoring posting 12 points while grabbing six boards. Ochoa was right behind him going for 10 points while dishing out a couple of assists.
The Penguins will return home Thursday Dec. 18
th for a matinee conference match up against Jessup at 2 p.m.
