SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball hosted the Sea Lions of Point Loma Friday night to open conference play.
Alexis Schwartz, the freshman standout from Carlsbad was everywhere on the court for the Pengs as she collected a team high 11 kills while posting 15 digs which was also a team high. Schwartz has now finished with 10 or more kills in seven matches this season for Dominican.
Point Loma came out hot to start the match winning the first two sets, but the Pengs would halt the Sea Lions momentum in the third set. Senior leader
Avery Schneider would set the tone in the third as she skied up for a block to get the Pengs on the board. Dominican would beat Point Loma on the frontline in this one as they finished with eight blocks compared to two for the visitors. Schneider, the Washington native, caused havoc for the Point Loma offense as she swatted down a team high five blocks. Junior
Ashlyn Daugherty was right behind her finishing with three of her own.
The defense for the Pengs provided the energy in the third set while the offense finished it off thanks in part to Schwartz and sophomore
Kali Young. Schwartz led the team in the kills department, and Young provided some big time kills late in the set to patten the Penguin lead. Dominican would get set point when Schneider found a soft spot in the Sea Lions defense for an emphatic kill, and then freshman
Kaylee Noa wrapped it up with a nicely put serve for the ace.
Sophomore
Chloe Cruz was feeding her teammates with nice dimes all night as she finished the match with 16 assists.
Ayla Johanski was right behind her with 12.
The Penguins will wrap up their home stand as they welcome in Jessup Wednesday, Oct. 8
