SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer could not hold a late lead drawing 2-2 with Menlo on Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Ashlynn Hill and
Felicity Muro each scored their first goals of the season for the Penguins (7-1-7, 3-1-3 PacWest). Kawai Acopan collected her fourth goal for the Oaks (2-5-5, 0-3-3 PacWest) while Kaylin Gonzalez tallied her fifth of the year.
Maxine Fuhrer played a perfect back heel pass to
Megan Clapinski in the fifth minute and she sprinted past everyone towards the goal and sent a shot on frame, but Giorgia Melcore was in the right spot to make the save. Ruby Doerr put her head after a corner kick bounced around the box a few times in the 21st minute for Menlo but was unable to generate much power on the shot and
Michelle Salas Viniegra made the save. Clapinski had another good look at the goal in the 27th minute trying to go low left with Melcore once again in position to make the save. Acopan sent a free kick in the 38th minute into the center of the box where it bounced once through the crowd and past the keeper inside the left post for the 1-0 Oaks lead.
Dominican looked like a different team in the second half stringing together possession and dangerous runs into the box. It did not take long to level the match as
Emma Wilson drove down the left sideline before sending a high cross into the box where Hill leapt and headed the ball inside the left post for the 1-1 tie. Hill had a dangerous shallow angle shot in the 56th minute from the right side of the box forcing Melcore to make a save to keep the game level. It would not stay so for long as
Araceli Mejia took the ball down the right side and sent the ball back to the top of the box where Muro charged the ball and took a curling kick inside the upper left corner to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute.
Acopan had some room for another dangerous ball from distance in the 70th minute but Salas Viniegra collected the ball in the middle of the net to maintain the lead. Another bouncing ball in the box proved a problem as this time Aaliyah Alatorre put a ball forward and Gonzalez was able to get her shoulder past a defender to deflect it at the last minute past the keeper and into the goal to draw Menlo even 2-2.
Dominican will conclude its regular season home games on Thursday as it takes on Hawai'i Pacific at 12:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
