SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Megan Clapinski set a new school record to lead Dominican women's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday afternoon in its final home game of the 2025 season.
Clapinski scored her eighth goal of the season for the Penguins (8-1-7, 4-1-3 PacWest) to break a five-way tie for the single-season record of the Dominican's NCAA Division II era. She now has 18 points, one behind Lauren Gollnick's D2 era record of 19 set in the 2012 season.
Michelle Salas Viniegra recorded her fifth shutout of the season and collected two saves to lead her team past the Sharks (2-7-4, 1-6-3 PacWest)
The Penguins withstood several dangerous runs from HPU early on not letting a ball cross past the backline with some solid defending.
Ashlyn Hill sprung free down the left side in the sixth minute for Dominican and sent a cross towards the center of the box where it was met by the foot of Clapinski but her deflection attempt steered wide. The Penguins continued to attack the flanks as one minute later
Shulien Kemmler Liu beat a couple defenders down the right side before crossing to the Hill who headed the ball from near the penalty spot, but once again the shot was off target on a prime scoring opportunity. The Sharks earned a free kick in the 11th minute from a dangerous position and Saraya Burghardt was bested by Salas Viniegra who was in the right spot to make the save for Dominican.
The breakthrough came in the 16th minute as Kemmler Liu once again drove down the right side firing a cross to Clapinski at the near post who put her back heel on it to deflect it off a defenders shin and into the back netting for the 1-0 lead. The Penguins dominated possession down the stretch with several more shots,
Fatima Waldo Garcia had a pair of good looks from inside the box in the 37th and 38th minutes but Skylar Jacobsen was there to make the save both times sending the game into the half with no further damage.
The second half was a physical affair with eight yellow cards issued between the two teams. Clapinski nearly had a brace in the 52nd minute as she went one-on-one with the keeper but Jacobsen got a piece of the ball to deflect it high and it hit the top right corner of the frame and bounced away from net.
Ayla Moore had several chances as her speed and height was a constant problem for the Sharks, her best chance came in the 60th as a cross found her near the back post but her shot attempt went wide. The Sharks made a furious push in the final 10 minutes as they were able to string together some possession time and Lauren Longworth had a good look at goal in the 84th minute but Salas Viniegra was in the right spot to gather the ball in for the save and preserve her shutout.
Dominican will hit the road for its final games of the regular season beginning with Vanguard on Thursday at 11 a.m. PST at VU Soccer Complex in Costa Mesa, California.
