Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Warfield's late equalizer hands Penguins a draw

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer came back from a slow start to earn a 1-1 draw Monday afternoon with Fresno Pacific at Kennelly Field.

Michelle Salas Viniegra made seven saves for the Penguins (7-1-6, 3-1-2 PacWest) while Carson Warfield scored her first career goal. The teams were nearly even statistically with Dominican holding a 12-11 edge in total shots, but the Sunbirds (0-7-5, 0-2-4 PacWest) led 8-7 in shots on frame.

The game opened slowly with each team attempting an early shot from distance that was easily gathered in by the opposing keeper. FPU offered up the first real chance of the game in the 28th minute as a throw in down the sidelines was deflected by a Penguin defender into the middle of the field where it found the Sunbirds' Bailey Roberson who used her speed to beat the defense before beating the keeper to the left post for a 1-0 lead. Bailey Nadell made a good run for Dominican in the 37th minute inside the right side of the box and sending a good look on frame that was gathered in by FPU's Ayana Kirisimasi to keep her team's lead heading into the break.

The Penguins settled in to a better groove in the second half on offense with possession and runs as Megan Clapinski found some space to test Kirisimasi to the bottom right corner, but the Sunbird keeper made an amazing diving save to push the ball wide of the post and keep the lead. Warfield and Clapinski played a brilliant combo with Warfield finding Clapinski near the top of the box before diving inside to the box where a perfectly weighted pass from Clapinski found her 1-on-1 with the keeper and she pushed the ball past her inside the left post for the 1-1 tie.

The Penguins kept the pressure on as Jenna Pevenage crossed a ball from the left sideline into the box and Fatima Waldo Garcia got a head on it to pop it high towards the crossbar forcing Kirisimasi to leap off her line and make the save to keep the game tied in the 70th minute. Ayla Moore also had a good look from the top of the box  in the 79th minute but her shot could not make it through the traffic in the box and was blocked aside before it could reach a danger zone. The Sunbirds made one final push in the final five minutes with three shots on Salas Viniegra, but she was in the right spot each time to make the save and the game ended in a tie.

Dominican will continue its final home stand of the year with its Senior Day on Saturday against Menlo at 12:30 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
