SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball hosted the Warriors of Jessup University Saturday afternoon for a PacWest clash. The Penguins took a while to get settled in, but they would eventually pull out the victory in this one 80 to 69.
Jessup came out the gates fast as they would jump out to an early 18-9 lead. Aydan Janssan picked up seven quick points after he drained a long three-pointer.
Jordan Archie kick started the Pengs offense midway through the first half when he zigged and zagged past the Warriors defense for a nice layup. The Gardena native would then show off his mid-range game on the ensuing possession as he hit nothing but net on his jumper.
Dominican's defense settled into the game after the fast start from Jessup forcing them into contested jump shots and forcing turnovers. Redshirt junior
DM Sanders who has been a solid contributor all season, made his mark in this one by scoring six straight points midway through the first. It all started when he drove the ball hard inside the paint and finished the play by knocking down two free throws. Then Sanders showed his arsenal by hitting a smooth step-back jumper followed by a three-pointer to cut the deficit to five.
Jessup would answer by going on a little run of their own to close out the first half leading by 10. In the second half it was the Pengs that started fast as Sanders picked off where he left off by draining a long range shot for the first points of the half. Dominican kept the momentum by going on a 12-0 run to grab the lead capped off by a three-pointer from Nate Ilunga.
Once the Pengs jumped out in front, they would never look back. Sanders and fellow junior
Darius Best led way offensively for the Pengs with Best posting a game high 23 points and Sanders right behind him dropping 18 points. Jeffery was a force down low all night as he finished the game with a double-double, 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Dominican will now hit the road as they are back in action Jan 16
th at Westmont College.
